No power steering?

Noticed something funny on my friends MR2 GT-S (1994 import). He said theres no powersteering, and theres no pump on the engine. But it has all the powersteering gear in the frunk. The control unit, reservior etc. How can you tell what a power steering rack looks like compared to the non-power ones? Also, can you check from any of the car numbers etc if it originally had it? My thourght are that it might have been removed in japan for some reason. Cause all of the powersteering gear is all
