In the May issue of Car and Driver there is an article about a old type of welding that has been used by mfgs but hasnt seemed to really catch on in widespread usage. Friction Stir Welding was invented in 1991.
FSW doesnt require heat. It uses pressure and friction only. It can be used to weld 2 different metals (which are usually difficult by hand) and is used recently in the 2013 Accord subframe.
